In The City With DeVille

DevilleThey are young, they are fresh, and they rock. DeVille started performing less than a year ago and already they’ve managed to generate well-deserved buzz. With an ever-growing fan base and a strong repertoire of original music, they are navigating their way through the DC music circuit and refine their style with each show. Their music at times is clearly influenced by, and reminiscent of, bands like Paramore, Pat Benetar, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers; as was the case at their most recent show on February 19th at The Red and The Black.

Through her songs and lyrics, lead singer GiGi shared stories about what we all know, feel, and wish we could say at just the right time. They opened with Cheated, which showcased their funky side with non-stop beats and strong melodies. Next came more fast-paced songs, each with a life of its own including I Do What I Want, City Girl, and Let Me In. These up-tempo songs allowed Trevor on drums to rip into the song with complicated rhythms and crashing cymbals leaving you breathless. Tunes like these characterize the attitude-infused music that has become DeVille’s signature.

DeVille is able to temper their more energetic pop and rock sound with a darker and more melancholy tone which is translated into songs like Same Sad Love Song. The haunting vocals and slower tempo highlight the band’s ability to harness their raw energy into something memorable. Ian and Patrick both carried songs such as Big Mistake with strong refrains and guitar hooks. Notably, several songs benefited from the clear and precise punctuation offered by Ian’s solid guitar solos.

The show proved that DeVille’s band members share a chemistry and love for their music and have the technical skill to back it up. Keep an eye on this band as they continue play shows in the DC area and record their debut album.
