Sight That Should Not Go Un-Scene
The Deleted Scenes show on May 21st returned me to one of my favorite venues in DC, the Black Cat. It had been months since I had seen a show there and the memory of stale beer and moody wall coverings were starting to fade. Getting there early I ordered a Guinness and listened to the line up of bands complete their sound check. It was hours before the show would start, but I could already tell it was going to be killer.

Club Scout, On The Rise
Making their way back into the DC-music scene is Club Scout. After some down time following their initial formation in 2007 and some line-up changes, Club Scout is back and already headlining shows, such as the one I saw at DC9 with opening bands, Winter Gloves and A Born Idler, where I was also able to catch up with these guys for an interview.

You Can Have Your Cake (and Kisses) and Eat It Too
Turns out you can have your cake (and kisses) and eat it too. District of Sound supports what Cake and Kisses organizers do every month, so much so that we had to go back and cover the party so readers could take another look into one of the best-loved underground DC-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) hip-hop parties in Northwest. The first Thursday of every month, the devoted core of DMV hip-hop fans gather at one of the few remaining dives on Adam Morgan’s 18th street strip, Asylum.

If the Hotel’s a Rockin’…
If you love DC music as much as we do at District of Sound (and I’m guessing you do because you’re reading this) and you attended last Saturday’s show at the Rock and Roll Hotel featuring Junior League Band, Once Okay Twice and DeVille, we’re sure you’ll agree that our shared love isn’t all for nothing. District of Sound hosted its spring 2009 show on May 2 at the Rock and Roll Hotel to benefit The Children’s Inn at NIH and to highlight three exceptional DC bands. The concert proved to be a memorable evening complete with great music, fun giveaways, $1 Pabst Blue Ribbons, and a chance to get close and personal with each band.

A Lasting Storm
Everyone has problems – regrets they must overcome, fears that will not rest, and addictions they cannot escape. For DC artist Justin Jones and the revolving cast of musicians who make up The Driving Rain, those problems are not burdens to be conquered, but rather stories to be shared. Framed by Jones’ truly unique voice and styling on the guitar, coupled with The Driving Rain’s impressive instrumentals, the band successfully blends together country, folk and pop. I caught the first of their two back-to-back performances on April 17th at the Rock and Roll Hotel, during which the band showcased a selection of songs from their latest album “….and i am the song of the drunkards”, as well as pieces from earlier recordings. By the end of the show, Jones had reaffirmed himself as a talented storyteller, weaving his triumphs and sorrows into a compelling soundtrack rooted in human connections.
